Why This is Important and What You Can Do

The Cause

The numbers are staggering:

  • Over 1 billion people live on less than $1 a day.
  • 115 million children are not in school
  • In developing countries, one child in 10 dies before his/her fifth birthday
  • 15 million children around the world have lost one or both parents to AIDS.
  • Over 2.4 billion people lack access to proper sanitation facilities.
  • 1.2 billion people lack access to clean water.

The Opportunity
At the 2000 UN Millenium Summit, 189 world leaders from rich and poor countries alike committed themselves - at the highest political level - to a set of eight time-bound targets that, when achieved, will end extreme poverty worldwide by 2015.

Through achievement of these Millenium Development Goals (MDGs), we can be the first generation to eradicate poverty.

The Challenge
Keeping our Promise.

The Response
Around the world people are rallying around the Millenium Development Goals, asking leaders to keep promises that were made to those in need. ONE.org is a campaign of 2.4 million of all beliefs and walks of life - united as ONE - to help make poverty history.

YOUR Response
VOICES AGAINST POVERTY is your opportunity to learn about the Millenium Development Goals and ONE.org and to be part of the solution.

And, of course, come to the event!

  • Visit with Community Partners at the Information Fair - learn more about work being done locally
  • Join us in worship - celebrating, with the music of U2, a call to come together for a purpose greater than ourselves
